Principle

Purpose at the centre

Let the organisation’s core purpose guide how work is organised, prioritised and followed up.

Why the principle exists

Purpose is the missing link between ambition and results.

When the purpose is unclear, both individuals and teams are left to carry too much themselves. They have to guess what matters most, interpret signals separately and spend energy trying to understand the direction instead of acting on it.

The purpose therefore needs to be more than a statement at an overarching level. It needs to be useful in everyday work: in priorities, meetings, decisions, follow-up and dialogue.

How it appears in everyday work

Meetings, goals and follow-up begin with what actually needs to be achieved.

In practice, the principle means that the organisation’s ways of working begin with the purpose. Goals, meetings and follow-up gain meaning through one question: what do we need to accomplish to succeed in our purpose?

01

Prioritisation

What matters becomes easier to see.

When the purpose is clear, it becomes easier to decide what should be done first, what can wait and what no longer contributes.

02

Context

Every team sees its part in the whole.

The combined purposes of individuals and teams should be recognisable in the organisation’s overarching purpose. This makes each contribution understandable and responsibility more tangible.

03

Follow-up

Results are connected to conditions for performance.

Follow-up becomes more useful when it shows how the work connects to the purpose and which conditions for performance need to be strengthened.

Connection to Verksamhetsskap

Purpose connects the Individual, the Team and the whole.

In the Agerus method, purpose is the level that provides direction and connects the parts. It answers what needs to be done, why it matters and how the work will succeed.

When purpose is brought to life through dialogue, people can interpret it together, understand their contribution and see which conditions they need to perform sustainably.
